2020 saw a marked reduction in both mass shootings and school shootings in the United States. But that wasn’t because anything changed in regulations and laws around firearms. It was because of the lockdowns and school closures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ogilvy New York collaborated with Change the Ref to create a dramatic, eye-opening film that visually concentrated on the emptiness of closed schools. The film, voiced by Ilana Waitze Zuckerman, a survivor of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, begins by seemingly addressing the dangers of the Covid virus. “Every gathering is a gamble,” Zuckerman says, as well as “we never know how risky a stranger can be.” Soon, the film and Zuckerman reveal that what theyy’re really describing is the epidemic of gun violence, and that the safest schools have ever been for Zuckerman and her generation was when they were closed. And that shouldn’t be the case.
